Medical uncertainty in pregnancy: psychological support
When something becomes complicated in pregnancy, you don't have to hold it all alone.
Receiving difficult news about your pregnancy, or waiting weeks for results, can leave you in a state of alert and fear that takes over everything.
Many women feel they have to stay strong and keep functioning "normally" while inside they're overwhelmed. The uncertainty about the baby's health, the tests, the hospital stays, or the complex decisions weigh enormously.
This can be a space where you set that burden down: where you don't have to put on a brave face or carry the weight of what's happening on your own.
I can support you in situations such as:
- Difficult diagnoses or waiting for medical results
- Uncertainty about the baby's health
- Hospital stays or bed rest
- Constant fear and a state of alert
- Processing complex decisions and feeling overwhelmed
When to seek psychological support alongside medical care
If you've received a difficult diagnosis, you're waiting for test results, or your pregnancy requires hospital follow-up, it's normal to feel overwhelmed. Psychological support doesn't replace medical follow-up — it helps you hold the emotional weight of that process.
If at any point you have thoughts of harming yourself, or feel you can't cope, please also share this with your medical team, or contact emergency services (112) or the 024 suicide-prevention helpline (Spain), alongside seeking psychological support.
What many women feel in these situations
While waiting for results or decisions
- Looping thoughts about the worst-case scenario
- Difficulty concentrating on work or the rest of your life
- A sense of constantly "holding your breath"
- Needing all possible information to feel some control
In communicating or managing the news
- Having to hold your partner or family together as well as yourself
- Feeling you have to appear strong in front of others
- Anger or disbelief at what's happening
- Isolation, because it's hard to explain what you feel
How I support you through medical uncertainty
We work to hold the waiting and the fear without letting them drag you under: regulating the state of alert, managing anticipatory thoughts, and finding small anchors of calm in the middle of uncertainty.
If you have to make difficult decisions, I accompany you to do so from a calmer place, respecting your values and your pace. It's not about having all the answers, but about not going through it in solitude.
Frequently asked questions about medical uncertainty in pregnancy
Does this replace the support of my doctor or midwife?
No. I work alongside your medical team, focusing on the emotional impact; decisions and clinical follow-up always remain with your healthcare team.
I'm in hospital or on bed rest, can I still have sessions?
Yes, all sessions are online, so you can join from hospital or from home if you're on bed rest.
Can I come for a single session while I wait for results?
Yes, you don't need to commit to a long process. Sometimes one or two sessions during a specific wait already bring real relief.
My partner is struggling too, can they join a session?
Sessions are individual, but we do spend time on how to communicate and support each other through this.
What if the news turns out not to be as serious as we feared?
It's also common to need to process the distress of the waiting itself, even when the outcome is good. That relief doesn't automatically erase the toll it took.
You don't have to be strong all the time. Asking for help is also a way of caring for yourself.
